OK all you book lovers. We are sorry to do this but one of the ways to lighten the load when moving is to get rid of some of those books you have. We understand parting with books is not an easy decision but it’s one of the best ways to reduce the stress of an upcoming move.

Not only that but getting rid of books can reduce your move’s cost. Because, let’s face it, books are heavy.

If you are a book lover and you have a ton of books in your home, here are a few ways that you can part with those books and still have them put to good use.

Donate books to a local charity.

There are a growing number of nonprofit organizations that will take gently used books. Take our partner, More than Words, a nonprofit bookstore in Boston. They will take your books and put them to good use and fund their mission in the process. If you can’t make it to Boston, you can either look for a similar organization or allow us to bring those books to them.

Check in with your local library for donations

Many libraries will accept book donations at various times of the year. Keep in mind the books must be in good condition. It’s a good idea to check in with your local library to see if they will take donations of books between book drives.

Have a yard sale to sell your books

If you just want to get rid of your books and don’t care about making too much money, you can have a yard sale and place a very affordable price tag on them. You may be surprised how quickly people purchase these.

Check with your community recycling center

Many recycling centers also have what they call swap sheds. You can leave items there, and people can take them for free. While we don’t advise you to drop off 500 books, if you want to get rid of a box or two, that may just work out.

Don’t worry. You can visit a local bookstore when you get to your new home.
