If you’re moving to another state from Massachusetts, you want to make sure that you have a few things prepared in advance before getting in your car and driving to your new home. We have many customers that are moving from Boston to Florida and even Boston to Texas and the important thing we tell them is to be prepared.

Here’s some advice from our Interstate moving experts here in Boston.

Map out your route in advance

We know everybody pretty much has a GPS in their car at this point. And if you don’t, you probably have one on your smartphone. But you should also take some time to map out your route the old-fashioned way, with a map. For example, if you’re moving from Boston and heading South, oftentimes your GPS will try to take you through New York City. And if you’ve ever driven through New York City you know that’s going to add an enormous amount of time getting to your destination. Take the time to review your route in advance.

Get your automobile serviced before moving

The last thing you want to add to your move is auto repairs or a broken-down car on the side of the road. You’re probably under a little bit of stress already and you just don’t need to be fixing your car when you’re trying to get to your new house. Go to a reputable auto repair shop and have your car serviced. Have your oil changed, have your tires looked at and anything else your mechanic feels needs to be done for your trip. This will give you Peace of Mind for your upcoming journey.

Understand where you may stop in your travels

If you’re driving long distance for your move, you’ll want to take a look at the areas where you can stop as well as safe and comfortable accommodations to stay overnight. You can even have a goal of driving a certain amount of time and then booking a hotel room for the evening. If you’re staying at a hotel, set that as a goal and book it in advance. That will not only guarantee that you get a room but you’ll save money by booking in advance.

Pay attention to the weather 7 days in advance

You’ll need to really pay attention to the weather especially if you’re moving in the winter. Once again if you’re moving from Boston or anywhere in New England, you’ll need to make sure that you’re not driving to your new home in bad weather. Even moving in the summer, you can still encounter bad weather so it’s a good idea to start looking at the weather a week out before you move.

Bring plenty of snacks

We suggest packing plenty of snacks if you’re driving to your new home. You might even want to pack a cooler with beverages because you never know when you might end up in a traffic jam. Your move to your new home because of traffic could be delayed and the last thing you want is to be starving. And if you have kids, this is a must including making sure they have plenty of activities and cell phone chargers.
