The Summer months are getting underway, which means we are in the thick of the busiest moving season of the year. Here at Humboldt Storage & Moving, we know during the Summer – busy schedules, the heat, the kids out of school, strict move timelines, mover availability, and more – can make moving an even more stressful experience than it normally is. Our experts have put together the following tips so you can be prepared for your Summer move.

Book Early! – During the Summer, chances are that most moving companies are stretched thin and are running on an extremely tight schedule. A good philosophy is to the sooner you book, the better. Booking in advance could potentially mean a savings. Rates tend to creep up as your load date approaches. Ideally, you should be starting the process  about 8 weeks out from your load date. The earlier you can secure your place on the mover’s schedule – the better for everyone. Remember to keep your mover updated with any changes regarding your move.

Be Prepared! –  Booking early also gives you time to prepare for moving day, which will help relieve some stress on you and your movers. If you are properly packed and prepared before the movers show up to your home, it could result in a faster, seamless, stress free move.

Pack Smart! – If you are packing your belongings yourself, remember to consider the temperature outside & within the moving truck. Do not pack temperate sensitive items, especially if you are moving cross country. Really consider if you will have the time and tools to pack your belongings yourself. Typically, this takes longer and is more intensive than most people anticipate. If you have the means, consider leaving the stress of packing up to the pros.

Communicate With Your Movers! – Communication is key when you are moving, you should maintain regular contact with your moving consultant so they know everything that you are planning on doing for moving day, that way there will be less questions when the day arrives. Communicating is also important because you can avoid many potential problems. If you tell your movers that you will be packed when they arrive, and life gets in the way and the packing doesn’t get done, then it can be difficult for the moving company to adjust. A lack of communication could end up costing you in the long run.

Be Flexible! – Because it is the busiest moving time of the year, flexibility on your end is key. You may have to load a day earlier than you hoped, the move may take longer to load than you expected, your delivery window may be more of a spread than you anticipated. Try to sit back, relax, and remember that moving is an exciting time full of new adventures. The moving companies are doing their best to get your items safely from Point A to Point B in a timely manner.

Move Day Has Arrived! – Remember to have bottled water on hand at your old house and new house. Staying hydrated is extremely important during the hot Summer months. Be kind to the movers – they are hot too! If you have children, plan to have a safe, climate controlled place for them to stay during the move. If at all possible, have a baby sitter scheduled at both ends of the move. This goes for pets as well.
