Crate Expectations - Crating

Abe Bryant had to wait 25 years. After
all, his predecessor had been on the job
for 52. But for the past 18 years, Bryant
has assumed the mantle of master crate maker
for Humboldt Storage and Moving, Greater
Boston's largest United Van Lines agent
and based in Canton, Mass. Now Humboldt
offers custom crate making to all its clients.
"The demand for crates is bigger now,"
the 43-year Humboldt employee said. "High-end
homes require high-end moving, whether around
the country or overseas."
Bryant and his assistant Bob Gray build
custom-designed crates from solid heat-treated
wood and plywood - no slats for them. And
they'll go onsite to personally pack the
precious cargo - right down to screwing
on the covers.
Bryant builds his crates oversized, then
packs the items in the right kind of protective
insulation, such as dolphin foam. Your antique
armoire, valuable painting or grand piano
will arrive at its destination intact. Want
to move an expensive chandelier? Bryant
will suspend it from the crate's cover and
fill the crate with protective foam to ensure
its safe arrival. "I can't remember
the last time we ever had a claim,"
he said.
