|
The Port of Boston is a major shipping and transportation hub and the oldest
active shipping port in the Western Hemisphere. For most of the 17th century,
Boston was America's largest and busiest port, serving the growing English colonies

salted fish. The industrial revolution was said to have begun in the nearby city
of Waltham. If you're moving to Boston or other nearby Massachusetts towns consider Humboldt moving company to manage your move, and store your extra possessions in our storage facility.

In the early part of this century the Port deteriorated as the Port of New
York became the major trading port
In the late 50's the autonomous, self-supported, Massachusetts Port Authority
(Massport) began the buy up properties on the deteriorating Boston
Waterfront area. Massport updated rail and road links and prepared the Boston
port for changes in modern global shipping. That change really hit home in 1966,
when new standardized shipping containers were starting to be used. These containers
are standardized 20 or 40 foot boxes which can be mounted on truck chassis, or
stacked up to eight high in the holds of ships The term TEU is a measure used
to calculate total cargo transfer in shipping ports. Massport constructed Castle
Island Container Terminal for Sea-Land and it became one of the first container
terminals in the US.
Today, the port contains facilities from Charlestown, to East Boston and South
Boston. It is split into two harbors (Inner Harbor and Outer Harbor) by East Boston
and the Logan International Airport. Access to the Port of Boston is from I-90,
I-93, I-95, and US 1. On-dock rail connections as well as a rail yard in the Boston
bring goods to the port. If you're shipping your car to an International destination
from Boston, your automobile will likely be shipped via the Port of Boston.
In 2004, the port handled 2 Billion Dollars worth of cargo (14 million metric
tons of cargo which was 3 Million metrics tons more than in 2000) including about
175,000 container TEUs. The Port sees the shipping of liquefied natural gas, automobiles,
cement, gypsum, and salt. 200,000 cruise ship passengers pass on 100 cruise ship
voyages each year. There is a shuttle from Logan International Airport to the
harbor. A number of Harbor Cruise Operators offer cruises of the Boston Waterfront,
and Ferries take passengers to the tip of Cape Cod. The Boston Harbor is heavily
used and water quality testing is managed by the Massachusetts Water Resources
Authority.
